It's Impossible To Sing and Play The Bass

A Great Day in Harlem

I picked him up at daycare up on Sugar Hill
For in fact his home is very near.
They said he jumped for joy when he saw me coming across the street
That's the stuff that grandpas love to hear.

Soon I had him in my arms he did not want to leave my arms,
And this boy loves to walk.
Once I had him in my arms he started chattering away,
Oh this boy loves to talk.

He takes my glasses and says "gasses" very clearly then he
Points and points and starts illuminating.
Of course he’s only one year old but he makes a lot of sense, he's
Seriously communicating.

We walk by a bar where Duke Ellington used to play, where
Willie Mays played stickball in the street.
He and I are off to the playground up on Coogan’s Bluff
Full of swings and climbing things so neat.

He climbs like a mountain lion I follow him like the secret service,
After all the kid has just turned one,
He sits on my lap I give him dinner-rice and chicken
Singing, eating, clapping, having fun.

6 PM we must leave Coogan’s bluff, return to Sugar Hill,
Places so well known in history. But
I have had a couple blessed hours with my grandson, it’s been a
Great day in Harlem for me.
